Myofascial Decompression (Cupping)

Here at Rogue Rehab in Salt Lake City, We offer the cupping therapy service. This treatment is also known as myofascial decompression.

I recall following the Rio 2016 Olympics, receiving TONS of phone calls asking for “cupping like Phelps.” The utilization of cupping therapy has been found in Chinese, Hindu, and Egyptian medical scriptures dating back to 3000 BC. Cupping, also known as myofascial decompression, is not new in Western cultures. Studies in the 1980s and early 2000s found pharmaceutical drugs to decrease pain quicker than cupping, hence the increased use of opiods. The majority of Eastern medicine practitioners continue to use cupping to address blocked or stagnant qi, while Western practitioners utilize it to decompress myofascial tissue. Most forms of manual therapy (massage, Graston, ASTYM) utilize compressive forces to attempt to distort myofascial tissue.

Cupping has been found to:

  • reduce the adhesive properties of tissue

  • stimulate collagen (structural protein in connective tissue) synthesis and fibroblast activity (cells that produce fibers such as collagen)

  • decrease concentrations of metabolic toxins and decrease pain thresholds

  • Improve microcirculation, promoting oxygenation of hypoxic (low oxygen) myofascial trigger points
